Photography-based documentation requires physical prototypes

SolidWorks Composer

Documentation ready in 2-5 days directly from CAD data

Associative updates -- documentation syncs when models change

Visual-first 3D instructions reduce errors by up to 85%

Built-in multi-language publishing from a single source file

Always-current digital content eliminates version confusion

Create visuals before prototypes exist using CAD data alone

85% Reduction in Assembly Errors

70% Faster Training Time

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our SolidWorks Composer services

What is SolidWorks Composer and how is it different from SolidWorks?

SolidWorks is a 3D CAD design tool used by engineers to create product models. SolidWorks Composer is a separate application specifically designed for creating technical documentation, interactive animations, and visual content from those CAD models. While SolidWorks focuses on engineering design, Composer focuses on communicating that design to non-engineers -- field technicians, assembly workers, customers, and sales teams. Composer uses a lightweight representation of CAD data, so it can handle very large assemblies without the performance issues of opening them in full CAD software.

Do I need a SolidWorks Composer license to view the deliverables?

No. We deliver content in universal formats -- PDF, MP4 video, HTML5, and image files that require no special software. For interactive 3D content, end users can use the free SolidWorks Composer Player or view it directly in a web browser. Only if you want to edit the source .SMG project files yourself would you need a Composer license.

I don't use SolidWorks -- can you still work with my CAD files?

Absolutely. SolidWorks Composer natively imports over 30 CAD formats including CATIA, Creo/Pro-E, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, STEP, IGES, Parasolid, JT, and many more. Simply send us whatever CAD format you use, and we handle the import and optimization. No conversion on your end is required.

How do associative updates work when my design changes?

One of Composer's most powerful features is associativity. When you update your CAD model and send us the new file, we re-link it to the existing Composer project. All views, animations, callouts, and BOM data update automatically to reflect the design changes. This means a design revision that would require weeks of manual documentation rework can be processed in hours, saving you significant time and cost on documentation maintenance.

How do you handle confidential CAD data and intellectual property?
What is the typical turnaround time for a project?

Turnaround depends on complexity: simple assemblies (under 10 steps) take 2-3 business days, mid-range projects (10-50 steps with animation) take 5-7 business days, and complex enterprise projects are scoped individually. We provide a firm delivery date in our quote. Rush delivery is available for time-sensitive projects at an additional fee.

Can you match our company's branding and documentation style?

Yes. We apply your brand colors, logo placement, font styles, and page layouts to all deliverables. If you have an existing style guide or documentation template, share it with us and we'll match it precisely. We can also create reusable templates for ongoing projects so that all future content maintains consistent branding across your entire documentation library.

Do you offer ongoing documentation maintenance contracts?

Yes, we offer retainer-based maintenance plans for companies with frequently changing products. Under a maintenance contract, we keep your Composer project files active and process design revision updates at a discounted rate with priority turnaround. This is ideal for companies that release regular product updates, engineering changes, or need documentation aligned with continuous improvement cycles.
