iLok is the copy-protection and license management system used by a large share of professional audio software, including Avid Pro Tools and plug-ins from many well-known developers. Made by PACE Anti-Piracy, it lets you store software licenses on a USB key, on a specific computer, or in the cloud, and move them between those locations with a free app called iLok License Manager.
If you have just bought your first professional plug-in and been asked to "activate it to an iLok location", this guide explains what that means and how to set things up so your studio keeps working.
The short answer
iLok is a licensing system from PACE. You create a free iLok account, install iLok License Manager, and activate each license to a location: a physical iLok USB key, your computer, or iLok Cloud. USB keys work offline and travel between studios, machine activations need no dongle, and iLok Cloud needs an internet connection while you work.
How iLok works
Every iLok-protected product comes with a license that is deposited into your iLok account. That license is not active until you place it somewhere. When you open your DAW, each plug-in checks that its license is present in an available location.
There are three main parts:
- Your iLok account at ilok.com, which holds all your licenses.
- iLok License Manager, the desktop app for activating, deactivating and moving licenses.
- Locations where licenses live: an iLok USB key, a computer, or iLok Cloud.
USB key, machine or iLok Cloud?
Developers decide which locations each product supports, so not every plug-in allows all three. When there is a choice, the trade-offs look like this:
| Location | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| iLok USB key | Works offline; move all licenses by moving the key; easy to use in other studios | Costs money; can be lost, stolen or broken; uses a port | Engineers who work in several studios |
| Computer (machine activation) | No dongle; works offline once activated | Tied to one computer; must deactivate before replacing or wiping it | Single-studio setups |
| iLok Cloud | No dongle; use licenses on any computer by opening a session | Needs a reliable internet connection while in use | Laptops in connected environments |
The current third-generation iLok comes in USB-A and USB-C versions and, according to Avid, can store up to 1,500 authorizations. It is sold through music retailers and directly from iLok; prices vary by region and connector type. The previous second-generation key is no longer sold new, so if you are offered a used one, check that the products you own support it.
Setting up iLok step by step
- Create a free account at ilok.com. Use an email address you will keep for years.
- Install iLok License Manager from the same site, and keep it updated.
- Register your purchase. Many developers deposit licenses automatically when you enter your iLok user ID at checkout. Others give you a code to redeem.
- Activate each license by dragging it from the "Available" list to a location in License Manager.
- Open your DAW and confirm the plug-ins load without authorization errors.
Moving licenses to a new computer
If your licenses are on a USB key, just plug it into the new machine. For machine activations, deactivate the licenses on the old computer first, then activate them on the new one. Forgetting this step is the most common iLok headache, especially when a computer is sent for repair or sold.
Protecting yourself from lost or broken keys
A failed iLok on deadline day can stop a session cold. PACE offers optional paid coverage for this: Zero Downtime (ZDT) provides temporary licenses quickly if a key is lost, stolen or broken, and a related Theft/Loss Coverage (TLC) option deals with keys that are lost or stolen. Terms change, so read the current details on the iLok site before you rely on them.
Practical habits help too:
- Keep a spare, empty iLok key in your studio so you can receive temporary licenses quickly.
- Use a short USB extension cable so the key is not snapped off in a laptop port.
- Split critical licenses so your DAW and essential plug-ins are not all on one fragile device.
- Note which licenses are on which location in a simple document.
- Never leave your key in a rental studio or a shared computer.
iLok when you collaborate or work in other studios
Licenses travel with you, not with the session file. If you send a Pro Tools or other DAW session to a collaborator, their system needs its own licenses for every plug-in you used, or those plug-ins will load as inactive. Before handing off a project:
- commit or print plug-in effects to audio on tracks where the sound matters;
- send a list of the plug-ins used, with versions;
- keep a copy of the unprocessed audio so the other engineer can rebuild the chain with their own tools.
When you work in someone else's studio, bring your iLok USB key with your own licenses on it, and remember to take it home.
Common iLok problems and fixes
- "License not found" in your DAW: open License Manager and check the license is activated to a location the computer can see.
- iLok Cloud session dropped: check the internet connection, then reopen the session. For live or location work, a USB key is safer.
- Key not recognized: try another port without a hub, update License Manager, and check for macOS or Windows security prompts.
- Too many activations used: deactivate unused locations, such as an old computer, in License Manager.
If problems persist, contact the plug-in developer first; they can see your license history and often fix issues faster than general support.
Why iLok matters to legitimate studios
Copy protection frustrates some users, but it is also why many developers can keep selling professional tools at sustainable prices. Pirated plug-ins bypass licensing and frequently carry malware, which is a serious risk on a machine holding client work. The same reasoning applies to video software, as our article on the risks of cracked Premiere Pro explains.
Pro Tools is the most common reason people meet iLok for the first time; our Pro Tools guide covers the wider setup. And if you would rather avoid managing licenses and plug-ins entirely, our audio editing service uses fully licensed professional software to finish your recordings. Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy an iLok USB key?
Not always. Many products support machine activation or iLok Cloud, which need no key. Some developers require a physical key for certain products, so check each product's requirements.
Does iLok Cloud work offline?
iLok Cloud is designed for connected use and needs an internet connection during your session. If you often work offline, use a USB key or machine activation instead.
Is iLok free?
The iLok account and iLok License Manager are free. The physical USB key and optional Zero Downtime coverage cost extra.
What happens if I lose my iLok?
Report it in your iLok account. If you have ZDT or TLC coverage, follow the recovery steps in your account to get your licenses working again. Without coverage, contact each developer, as policies vary.
