Amazon has strict image requirements that directly impact your product's visibility and sales. Non-compliant images get rejected, delaying your listings and costing you potential revenue. Understanding these requirements thoroughly ensures your images pass review on the first submission.
This comprehensive guide covers every aspect of Amazon's image requirements—from the main product image to supplemental images, technical specifications, and category-specific rules. Follow these guidelines to create images that not only get approved but also convert browsers into buyers.
1. Main Image Requirements
The main image (also called the "hero" image) is the first image customers see in search results. Amazon has the strictest requirements for this image, and violations result in automatic rejection.
Mandatory Main Image Requirements
Pure white background (RGB 255,255,255)
Product must fill 85% of image frame
No text, logos, or watermarks
No props, accessories, or packaging
No people or models (most categories)
Minimum 2000x2000 pixels
JPEG, PNG, GIF, or TIFF format
True-to-life colors, no filters
The 85% Rule Explained
Amazon requires the product to fill at least 85% of the image frame. This means your product should occupy most of the visible area with minimal white space around it. However, don't crop so tightly that parts of the product are cut off. The goal is prominence without distortion.
For irregularly shaped products, measure from the outermost points. A guitar, for example, should show the full instrument from headstock to body, filling the frame while maintaining the entire product within bounds.
2. Supplemental Image Guidelines
Supplemental images (the additional images beyond the main image) have more relaxed requirements but still need to follow Amazon's guidelines. These images help customers understand your product better.
What Supplemental Images Can Include
- Different angles of the product
- Close-up details and features
- Product in use (lifestyle shots)
- Size comparisons and scale references
- Packaging and what's included
- Infographics with product information
- Charts and sizing guides
Supplemental Image Requirements
While supplemental images have more flexibility, they must still follow these rules:
- No offensive, controversial, or objectionable content
- No third-party logos or trademarks
- No pricing, promotional, or "best seller" claims
- No shipping information
- Minimum 2000x2000 pixels for zoom functionality
- Must accurately represent the actual product
3. Technical Specifications
Meeting Amazon's technical specifications ensures your images display correctly and qualify for the zoom feature, which significantly improves conversion rates.
Technical Requirements Table
Resolution
Minimum 2000x2000px for zoom. Recommended 2500x2500px.
File Size
Maximum 10MB. Keep under 2MB for faster loading.
Square (1:1) recommended. Amazon crops to square.
Color Profile and Format
Use sRGB color profile for consistent color display across devices. JPEG is the most reliable format for Amazon. PNG supports transparency but isn't needed for main images (which require white backgrounds). Avoid GIF for main images due to limited color support.
Amazon automatically converts images to their internal format, but starting with optimized source files ensures the best final quality. Compress images to reduce file size without sacrificing visible quality—aim for under 2MB while maintaining sharpness.
4. Content Restrictions
Amazon prohibits certain content in product images. Understanding these restrictions prevents rejections and potential account issues.
Prohibited Content in Main Images
- Non-white backgrounds
- Text, logos, or watermarks
- Promotional text ("Sale," "Free Shipping")
- Graphics or illustrations
- Props or accessories not included
- Packaging (unless it's the product)
- Human models (most categories)
- Animals (most categories)
Restricted Content in Supplemental Images
Supplemental images have fewer restrictions but still prohibit:
- Third-party trademarks or logos (unless authorized)
- Pricing or promotional information
- Shipping or delivery claims
- "Best Seller," "Top Rated," or similar badges
- Customer reviews or testimonials
- External website URLs
5. Category-Specific Requirements
Different product categories on Amazon have additional requirements beyond the general guidelines. Understanding your category's specific rules prevents delays.
Category-Specific Guidelines
Apparel & Accessories
Flat lay or ghost mannequin photography required. No live models for main image.
Jewelry
Professional photography required. No stock photos. Scale references recommended.
Beauty & Personal Care
Must show actual product. Before/after images prohibited for main image.
Food & Beverage
Show actual product, not serving suggestions for main image.
6. Common Rejection Reasons
Understanding why images get rejected helps you avoid the same mistakes. Here are the most common reasons for image rejection on Amazon.
Not Pure White Background
Background must be RGB 255,255,255. Off-white or gray fails.
Product Too Small
Must fill 85% of frame. Insufficient product prominence.
Text or Logos Visible
Main image must be clean—no branding, text, or watermarks.
Low Resolution
Below 2000x2000px won't qualify for zoom feature.
Props or Accessories
Only show the actual product—no decorative props.
Unrealistic Colors
Filters or heavy editing that misrepresents product color.
7. Best Practices for Approval
Following these best practices maximizes your chances of first-submission approval and creates images that convert well.
Pro Tip: Before submitting, use Amazon's Image Checklist tool in Seller Central. It automatically checks for common issues and flags potential problems before submission.
Pre-Submission Checklist
- Verify background is pure white using color picker
- Check product fills 85% of frame
- Ensure minimum 2000x2000 resolution
- Confirm no text, logos, or watermarks
- Verify accurate color representation
- Check for any visible props or packaging
- Test zoom functionality at 2000x2000
- Review Amazon's category-specific requirements
8. Image Optimization for Conversions
Compliance gets your images approved—optimization gets them clicked. Here's how to create images that drive sales while meeting Amazon's requirements.
Supplemental Image Strategy
Use your supplemental images to answer customer questions and overcome objections. Each image should provide new information: different angles, details, scale, packaging, or usage context. Think of supplemental images as a visual sales pitch.
Infographics are particularly effective for supplemental images. Show dimensions, features, and benefits graphically. These visual aids help customers understand your product quickly, reducing uncertainty and increasing confidence.
9. Tools and Resources
Several tools help ensure your images meet Amazon's requirements and optimize them for the platform.
Seller Central Image Checker
Built-in tool that automatically checks image compliance before listing goes live.
Background Removal Tools
Remove.bg, Photoshop, or clipping path services for pure white backgrounds.
Image Compression
TinyPNG or Squoosh for optimizing file sizes while maintaining quality.
Resolution Checkers
Verify your images meet the 2000x2000px minimum requirement.
10. Compliance Checklist
Use this comprehensive checklist before submitting any product images to Amazon. Each item ensures compliance and prevents costly rejections.
Main image has pure white background (255,255,255)
Product fills 85%+ of image frame
No text, logos, or watermarks on main image
Minimum resolution 2000x2000 pixels
Accurate product colors without filters
No props, packaging, or accessories in main image
JPEG format with sRGB color profile
File size under 10MB
11. Advanced Image Optimization Techniques
Beyond basic compliance, advanced optimization techniques can significantly improve your product's performance on Amazon. These strategies help your images stand out in search results and convert more browsers into buyers.
White Background Optimization
Creating a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255) seems simple but requires precision. Use a lightbox or professional background removal tools to achieve consistent results. The product should have soft, natural shadows that add depth without creating gray areas. Avoid harsh shadows that create uneven backgrounds or artificial-looking edges.
Test your white background by opening the image in any photo viewer and using the color picker tool. Every pixel in the background area should read exactly 255,255,255. Even slightly off-white values (250,250,250) can trigger rejection or reduce image quality when Amazon processes it.
Product Angle Strategy
Choose angles that showcase your product's best features while providing complete visual information. The main image should show the product from its most recognizable angle. Supplemental images should progressively reveal details: side views, back views, close-ups of features, and scale references.
For products with multiple components, ensure each image clearly shows what's included. Customers should understand exactly what they're receiving without reading the description. Use consistent angles across your catalog for brand recognition and professional presentation.
Color Accuracy and Consistency
Amazon requires true-to-life colors, but achieving accuracy requires careful attention. Use calibrated monitors and consistent lighting setups. Photograph products in their actual colors without filters or enhancements. For color variations, photograph each variant separately rather than relying on post-processing color changes.
Create a color reference chart for your products and compare photographed colors against physical samples. Different lighting conditions (daylight, tungsten, fluorescent) produce different color casts. Use consistent lighting across all product photography to maintain catalog-wide color accuracy.
Image File Optimization
Optimize image files for Amazon's processing while maintaining quality. Use JPEG format with quality settings between 85-95% for the best balance of quality and file size. Remove unnecessary metadata to reduce file size. Compress images using tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh without visible quality loss.
Target file sizes under 2MB for optimal loading speed while maintaining the 2000x2000 minimum resolution. Amazon's servers cache and serve images efficiently, but smaller files load faster on mobile devices where most shopping occurs. Test image loading speed on various devices to ensure optimal performance.
12. Category Deep Dive: Apparel Photography
Apparel has some of Amazon's most specific photography requirements. Understanding these rules prevents rejections and creates images that drive clothing sales.
Ghost Mannequin Technique
Ghost mannequin photography creates a 3D effect showing how clothing fits without a visible model or mannequin. This technique requires photographing the garment on a mannequin, then shooting the interior separately, and compositing the images in post-production. The result shows the front, sides, and inside collar area, giving customers a complete view.
Amazon requires either ghost mannequin or flat lay photography for apparel main images. Ghost mannequin is preferred for most clothing items as it shows fit and shape more accurately. Invest in quality mannequins and professional compositing to meet Amazon's standards.
Flat Lay Requirements
Flat lay photography shows clothing laid flat on a surface. This approach works well for accessories, folded items, and certain garment types. Use a clean white background, ensure the garment is perfectly flat and wrinkle-free, and maintain consistent spacing around the item. The product should fill 85% of the frame just like other categories.
For flat lay photography, use a tripod directly above the product for consistent perspective. Steam or iron garments before shooting to remove wrinkles. Use pins or tape (hidden from view) to maintain shape. Consistent lighting prevents shadows that create uneven backgrounds.
Size and Scale References
While not required for main images, size references in supplemental images help customers understand fit. Include measurements, model dimensions (height/weight), or comparison objects. These references reduce returns caused by size misunderstandings and improve customer confidence.
Create standardized size reference images that apply across your apparel catalog. Use consistent models, measurements, or comparison objects. This consistency helps customers compare sizes across products and builds trust in your sizing accuracy.
Color Variant Photography
Each color variant requires its own set of images. Photograph the same product in each available color using identical angles, lighting, and composition. This consistency helps customers compare colors accurately and maintains a professional catalog appearance. Don't rely on digital color changes—photograph actual products.
When photographing multiple colors, establish a systematic workflow: shoot all angles of one color before moving to the next. This approach ensures consistency and efficiency. Name files systematically (product-color-angle.jpg) for easy organization and upload.
13. Category Deep Dive: Electronics and Hard Goods
Electronics and hard goods present unique photography challenges due to reflective surfaces, complex shapes, and multiple components. Master these techniques for professional results.
Reflective Surface Management
Reflective products (glass, metal, polished plastic) require specialized lighting techniques. Use large light sources (softboxes, scrims) to create smooth, even reflections. Avoid small, direct light sources that create harsh hot spots. Polarizing filters can reduce unwanted reflections while maintaining product appearance.
For highly reflective products, consider using a light tent or shooting in a controlled studio environment. These setups provide even, diffused lighting that minimizes reflections while maintaining product detail. Practice with sample products before shooting your entire catalog.
Multi-Component Products
Products with multiple components (kits, sets, electronics with accessories) require careful composition. Show all included items in the main image while maintaining the 85% fill requirement. Use supplemental images to detail each component individually and show how they work together.
Create a "what's in the box" image showing all included components laid out clearly. This image reduces customer service inquiries and returns by setting accurate expectations. Label components if necessary (using supplemental images only, not the main image).
Screen and Display Photography
Products with screens (phones, tablets, monitors) require special attention. Turn on the screen with a clean, attractive display. Avoid showing personal information, notifications, or distracting content. Use anti-aliasing techniques to prevent moiré patterns when photographing screens.
For screens, match the camera's shutter speed to the screen's refresh rate to avoid black bars or flickering. Use manual camera settings rather than auto mode for consistent results. Consider using screen capture software for supplement images showing interface details.
Scale and Dimension References
Electronics and hard goods often need size context. Include dimension references in supplemental images—rulers, common objects, or hand comparisons. These references help customers understand actual product size, reducing returns due to size expectations.
Create standardized scale reference images for your product categories. Use consistent reference objects (hands, coins, rulers) across your catalog. This consistency helps customers compare sizes across products and builds reliable size expectations.
14. Amazon A+ Content Image Requirements
Amazon A+ Content (Enhanced Brand Content) allows additional imagery and text in product descriptions. Understanding these requirements helps you create compelling enhanced content that improves conversion rates.
A+ Content Image Specifications
A+ Content images have different requirements than main product images. Backgrounds can be colored or lifestyle-oriented. Text overlays are permitted but should be minimal and professional. Image resolution should be at least 970x600 pixels for standard modules, with 1500x750 recommended for optimal display.
A+ Content images should complement your main product images, not repeat them. Use these images for lifestyle shots, feature callouts, comparison charts, and brand storytelling. Maintain consistent branding across all A+ Content images for professional presentation.
Comparison Chart Images
Comparison charts are powerful A+ Content tools. Create clean, professional charts comparing your product features against competitors or across your product line. Use consistent formatting, clear text, and professional graphics. These charts help customers make informed decisions and highlight your product advantages.
Design comparison charts for mobile viewing—most Amazon shopping occurs on phones. Use large enough text (minimum 14pt) and high contrast colors. Test your charts on actual mobile devices to ensure readability before uploading.
Brand Story Images
A+ Content brand stories use images to communicate your brand values and quality. These images should be emotionally engaging while remaining professional. Show your manufacturing process, quality control, or brand lifestyle. These images build trust and differentiate your products from competitors.
Maintain visual consistency between brand story images and product images. Use similar color grading, lighting styles, and composition approaches. This consistency reinforces your brand identity across all customer touchpoints.
Infographic Best Practices
Infographics in A+ Content should be informative yet visually appealing. Use clean design, professional typography, and consistent brand colors. Highlight key product features, dimensions, or benefits graphically. Keep text minimal—let visuals communicate the message. Test infographics on multiple screen sizes for readability.
Create infographic templates that apply across your product catalog. This approach ensures consistency and speeds up content creation. Use the same fonts, colors, and layout principles for all infographics to build recognizable brand visual language.
15. Future-Proofing Your Amazon Images
Amazon's requirements evolve as technology advances. Creating images that adapt to future changes protects your investment and maintains compliance over time.
Resolution and Format Trends
Amazon may increase resolution requirements as displays improve. Shoot at higher resolutions (3000x3000 or above) and store original files. This forward-thinking approach ensures your images meet future requirements without reshooting. Store uncompressed TIFF or PSD files alongside optimized JPEGs.
Monitor Amazon's Seller Central announcements for requirement changes. Join seller forums and communities to stay informed about upcoming updates. Being among the first to adapt to new requirements can provide competitive advantages.
Mobile-First Optimization
Mobile shopping continues to grow, and Amazon's mobile app has specific image display characteristics. Optimize images for mobile viewing: ensure key details are visible at smaller sizes, use high contrast for visibility in various lighting conditions, and test images on actual mobile devices before uploading.
Consider how your images appear in Amazon's mobile app grid view. The main image should be compelling even at thumbnail size. Details and text should remain readable when viewed on phone screens. Mobile optimization is no longer optional—it's essential for reaching the majority of Amazon shoppers.
Video Content Integration
Amazon increasingly supports video content in listings. While not replacing images, product videos complement static imagery. Plan your visual content strategy to include both high-quality images and video. This comprehensive approach meets current requirements while preparing for future content evolution.
When shooting product images, capture video simultaneously. This efficient approach provides both static and dynamic content from single shooting sessions. Ensure your photographer can deliver both image and video assets for maximum content flexibility.
Maintaining Image Archives
Organize and archive all product images systematically. Store original RAW files, layered PSD files, and optimized JPEGs. This archive allows quick modifications when requirements change, new size variations are needed, or products are updated. Good archiving practices save time and money on future content updates.
Implement a consistent file naming convention and folder structure. Include product SKU, shoot date, and image type in file names. This organization makes finding and updating specific images efficient, especially when managing large catalogs with hundreds or thousands of products.
16. Troubleshooting Common Amazon Image Issues
Even with careful preparation, image issues can arise. Knowing how to troubleshoot common problems saves time and prevents repeated rejections. Here are solutions for the most frequent issues sellers encounter.
Background Color Problems
The most common rejection reason is background color not being pure white. Even seemingly white backgrounds may contain subtle color casts or gradients. Use the eyedropper tool in any image editor to verify every background pixel reads RGB 255,255,255. Pay special attention to shadow areas and edges where the product meets the background—these areas often contain gray or colored pixels.
If your background isn't perfectly white, use Photoshop's Select Subject tool followed by Edit > Fill > White to create a pure white background. For complex products with fine details (hair, fur, lace), manual background removal may be necessary for accurate results. Consider professional background removal services for challenging products.
Product Fill and Framing Issues
Products that don't fill 85% of the frame get rejected. This often happens with small products or incorrect cropping. Measure from the outermost points of your product and ensure they extend to within 7.5% of each edge (leaving 15% total margin). For irregularly shaped products, include all protruding elements within the frame.
Use Amazon's preview tools in Seller Central to check how your image will appear in search results. The thumbnail view should prominently display your product. If the product appears too small in thumbnail view, the fill percentage is likely insufficient. Reshoot or re-crop to meet the 85% requirement.
Resolution and Quality Problems
Low-resolution images fail to qualify for Amazon's zoom feature and may be rejected outright. Ensure your camera captures at least 2000x2000 pixels. Check image resolution in your camera settings and verify in post-processing. Upscaling low-resolution images doesn't create detail—reshoot at proper resolution.
Blurred or soft images also get rejected. Use a tripod for every product shoot, even with fast lenses. Enable image stabilization if available. For small products, use macro mode or extension tubes for sharp close-up results. Review images at 100% zoom before submitting to catch sharpness issues.
Prohibited Content Detection
Amazon's automated systems detect text, logos, and watermarks in images. Even small watermarks or embedded text trigger rejection. Review your images carefully for any text elements, including small print on products, price tags, or photographer watermarks. Remove all text before submission.
Logos on products themselves are acceptable if they're part of the actual product (like a brand logo on clothing). However, added watermarks or photographer logos violate requirements. When in doubt, err on the side of clean, text-free images for main product photos.
Color Accuracy Complaints
If customers complain that product colors don't match your images, your photos may be over-enhanced or using incorrect white balance. Shoot with a gray card for accurate white balance, and avoid heavy saturation adjustments. Amazon requires true-to-life colors—your images should accurately represent what customers receive.
Compare your images against physical products under different lighting conditions. Colors appear differently on various screens, but your images should be accurate when viewed on a calibrated monitor. If color accuracy is consistently problematic, consider professional color correction services.
