Our Approach
Color Isn't Decoration — It's Memory Reconstruction
Most automated colorization tools spit out blue skies and peach skin tones no matter what century the footage comes from. That's not what we do.
Our colorists begin every project by researching the era — newspaper photos, clothing catalogs, military uniform records, vehicle paint registries, even architectural color archives. Only then do we pick up the brush.
Deep Historical Research
Every shade traced back to a primary source — not guessed.
Human Colorists, Not Just AI
15-year veterans supervise every key frame.
Museum-Grade Output
4K, 8K, HDR, DCP — ready for the biggest screen.
Eras We Specialize In
130 Years of Cinematic History
Each decade demands its own color language. We study them all.
1890s–1910s
Silent Era
Nitrate film, hand-tinted frames, gas-lamp lighting references.
1920s–1930s
Jazz Age
Art Deco palettes, flapper fashion tones, early Technicolor references.
1940s
WWII Era
Military uniform archives, ration-era clothing, war-front color records.
1950s
Post-War Boom
Pastel suburbia, chrome cars, mid-century modern color theory.
1960s
Cultural Revolution
Psychedelic palettes, mod fashion, counter-culture poster art.
1970s
Disco Era
Earthy browns, harvest gold, avocado — the authentic palette of the decade.
1980s
Neon Age
Vivid synth-era colors, neon signage, power-dressing fashion tones.
1990s
Grunge Era
Muted flannels, denim, hip-hop streetwear, early digital-film crossover.

The Science of Color
How Color Changes Everything
Research shows audiences engage 3× longer with colorized history. Here's why.
Emotional Connection
Viewers form 5× stronger emotional bonds with colorized footage vs. B&W — the brain processes color as "present day."
Memory Recall
Adding color triggers long-forgotten memories — we've seen families recognize faces they thought they'd lost.
Viewer Retention
Documentary watch-time increases 280% when archival footage is colorized vs. left in B&W — educational impact soars.
Cross-Generational Reach
Younger audiences skip B&W content 4× more often. Color makes history accessible to every generation.
How It Works
A Careful, Five-Stage Journey

03
Restoration
Dust, scratches, grain, and damage are cleaned up before a single drop of color is applied.
04

Stories From Clients
Tears, Goosebumps, Gratitude
"I had my mother's 1962 wedding reel on a dusty shelf for 40 years. ChromaFilm returned it with the exact shade of her dress — periwinkle, just like she described. I watched it with her on her birthday. She wept."
Sarah Bergmann
Family Client · Portland, OR
"We hired ChromaFilm for a 6-episode PBS documentary covering 1920s Harlem. Their research document alone saved our editorial team weeks. Audiences loved the colorized footage — our ratings doubled."
Derek Anderson
Executive Producer · PBS History
"ChromaFilm handled 2,400 reels from our museum collection. Their workflow was flawless — every delivery came with citations. A museum-grade partner we'll use for years."

Common Questions
How does colorization from B&W actually work?
We use a hybrid workflow: AI models generate a base color layer using historical references, then our colorists hand-correct every frame — especially skin tones, clothing, and era-specific objects. Historians verify the final color palette before delivery.
Can you guarantee historically accurate colors?
For Studio and Cinematic tiers, yes — every color is cited to a primary source (uniform archives, paint catalogs, textile records). A research document is delivered alongside your master. For Family Starter, we use best-available references without custom historian review.
What happens to my original footage?
It's sacred. Physical film is stored in climate-controlled vaults, handled only with cotton gloves, and returned by insured courier. Digital sources are encrypted, backed up, and deleted from our servers 90 days after final delivery (unless you request longer retention).
Do you handle 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film reels?
Absolutely — plus 9.5mm, Super 8, 70mm, and even rare formats like Nitrate (with proper handling). We can scan raw film at 4K/8K before colorization, or work from your pre-existing digital scans.
Will colorization damage my film?
Never. All colorization is done on digital copies — your original film is never touched beyond the scan. You always keep the original B&W version and receive the colorized copy as a separate master.
What if I'm not happy with the result?
100% satisfaction guarantee. Studio and Cinematic tiers include unlimited revisions until approval. If we can't meet your vision, you receive a full refund — no questions asked.
