Cranberries Band Members: Who Played in The Cranberries

The Cranberries band members were four musicians from Limerick, Ireland: singer Dolores O'Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler. That lineup stayed together from 1990 until O'Riordan's death in 2018, making it one of the most stable lineups in 1990s rock.

Below is who each member was, how the band formed, its studio albums and what the surviving members have done since.

The short answer

The Cranberries were Dolores O'Riordan (lead vocals), Noel Hogan (guitar), Mike Hogan (bass) and Fergal Lawler (drums). The band started in 1989 with singer Niall Quinn, who left in 1990 and was replaced by O'Riordan. After O'Riordan died in January 2018, the remaining members completed one final album, In the End (2019), and then ended the band.

Meet the members

Dolores O'Riordan

O'Riordan joined in 1990 after auditioning for the band. Her voice, with its yodel-like breaks and Irish lilt, became the band's signature, and she wrote the lyrics and much of the melody for its best-known songs. She also released solo albums, Are You Listening? (2007) and No Baggage (2009). She died in London on January 15, 2018,.

Noel Hogan

Noel was the band's guitarist and O'Riordan's main songwriting partner. His chiming, effects-rich guitar parts gave songs such as "Linger" and "Dreams" their dreamy, open sound. He typically wrote the music, and O'Riordan added melodies and lyrics on top, a partnership that started with the demo tape that became "Linger."

Mike Hogan

Noel's brother played bass. His lines were simple and melodic, anchoring the songs so the guitar and vocals had space.

Fergal Lawler

Lawler played drums from the beginning. His restrained, steady playing suited the band's mix of gentle ballads and heavier songs like "Zombie."

Niall Quinn

Quinn was the band's first singer when it was called The Cranberry Saw Us. He left in early 1990 to return to his previous band, which opened the door for O'Riordan.

How The Cranberries formed

The Hogan brothers and Lawler formed the group in Limerick in 1989 with Quinn on vocals. After Quinn's exit, O'Riordan auditioned in mid-1990, taking home a demo tape from Noel Hogan and coming back within a week with lyrics and a melody that became "Linger." The band shortened its name to The Cranberries and signed with Island Records in 1991, releasing its debut album in 1993.

The band sold tens of millions of albums worldwide. The striking, simple covers of those early records are a good example of how artwork shapes a band's identity, a theme we explore in our guide to album cover art.

Hiatus, reunion and the final album

The band announced a hiatus in 2003 so the members could spend time on individual careers and family; O'Riordan later said the band had started to feel predictable. They reunited in 2009, toured, and released Roses in 2012. Something Else followed in 2017, pairing new songs with reworked versions of older hits recorded with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, which gave familiar songs like "Linger" and "Zombie" a new, stripped-back setting.

When O'Riordan died in 2018, she had already recorded demo vocals for a new album. The surviving members, working with producer Stephen Street, who had also produced the band's early albums, finished those songs as In the End, released in April 2019. It was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. Noel Hogan had said the band would not continue without O'Riordan, and In the End became its final album.

Completing an album from demo vocals is careful, painstaking work: cleaning noise, matching tone across takes and building full arrangements around vocals that were never meant to be final. It is one of the clearest examples of how editing and production can preserve a performance. Our guide to rescuing imperfect recordings explains some of the techniques involved, and professional audio editing and restoration is often how artists and families handle archival recordings.

Awards and recognition

The Cranberries were never a critics' band first, but they collected a solid set of honors during their run:

  • MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song for "Zombie" (1995).
  • World Music Award for Best Irish Recording Artists (1995).
  • Juno Award for International Album of the Year for No Need to Argue (1996).
  • Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement (1997).
  • A Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album for In the End at the 2020 ceremony.

Side projects

During the 2003 to 2009 hiatus, each member kept busy. Noel Hogan formed Mono Band, which later became Arkitekt, with Mike Hogan also involved. Fergal Lawler played with The Low Network and other groups. O'Riordan focused on her solo albums, and late in her life she was also working on a project called D.A.R.K.

What the members have done since

Since the band ended, the remaining members have worked on anniversary reissues of the catalog, including a 30th-anniversary edition of No Need to Argue. Noel and Mike Hogan have also performed Cranberries songs live with guest singers on occasion. Any future activity is best confirmed through the band's official channels, as plans can change.
