Alternative Search Engines: 10 Options Beyond Google Compared
Ten alternative search engines compared on privacy, result quality and features, how to pick the best search engine for you, and what it means for your SEO.
On this page
Google handles roughly nine out of ten searches worldwide, but plenty of people use alternative search engines for privacy, independent results, environmental causes, ad-free pages or AI-generated answers. Many of these options are genuinely good now, and some power features inside browsers, phones and AI assistants that millions use without realizing it.
This guide compares the main alternatives, explains where their results come from, and covers what the rest of the search market means for businesses doing SEO.
The short answer
The strongest alternative search engines are Bing (the biggest independent index after Google), DuckDuckGo and Startpage for privacy, Brave Search for an independent index, Ecosia for environmental impact, Kagi for paid ad-free search, and Perplexity for AI answers with sources. The best search engine depends on whether you value privacy, independence, AI summaries or simply result quality.
How big are the alternatives?
According to StatCounter's search engine market share data for September 2026, Google held close to 90% of worldwide search, with Bing at about 5.3%, Yahoo about 1.4%, Yandex about 1.3%, DuckDuckGo about 0.7% and Baidu about 0.4%. Shares look different by country and device: Bing does better on desktop, Yandex leads in Russia, Baidu in China and Naver is strong in South Korea.
Small percentages still mean large audiences. A fraction of global search is many millions of queries a day.
10 alternative search engines compared
| Search engine | Main appeal | Where results come from |
|---|---|---|
| Bing | Strong results, Copilot AI, Microsoft Rewards | Microsoft's own index |
| DuckDuckGo | No personal tracking or search history profiles | Mostly Bing plus its own sources |
| Brave Search | Independent index, privacy, AI summaries | Brave's own index |
| Startpage | Google-quality results without tracking | Google, accessed privately |
| Ecosia | Uses profits for tree planting and climate projects | Partner indexes plus its own European index work |
| Kagi | Paid, ad-free, highly customizable | Mix of its own index and third-party sources |
| Perplexity | AI answers with cited sources | Its own crawling plus web search |
| Yahoo | Familiar portal with news and finance | Largely Bing |
| Yandex | Leading engine for Russian-language search | Yandex's own index |
| Mojeek | Small, fully independent, privacy-first | Its own index |
Independent indexes vs results borrowed from others
The third column in the table matters more than it looks. Building a web-scale index means crawling and storing billions of pages, which only a few companies do: Google, Microsoft (Bing), Yandex, Baidu, Brave, Mojeek and a handful of others. Many alternative search engines are better described as front ends. They license results from a bigger index, add their own ranking tweaks, features and privacy protections, and present them in their own interface.
That isn't a bad thing. Startpage gives you Google's results without Google's tracking, and DuckDuckGo adds instant answers and tracker blocking. But it means two "different" engines can show very similar results, and an outage or policy change at the source index affects all of them. If you want genuinely different results, for research or to escape a filter bubble, try an engine with its own index.
Choosing the best search engine for your needs
For privacy
DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Brave Search and Mojeek don't build personal profiles from your searches. Startpage is the choice if you like Google's results; DuckDuckGo is the most polished all-rounder; Brave is attractive if you want results that don't depend on Google or Bing. Remember that privacy in search doesn't stop sites you visit from tracking you; pair it with a privacy-respecting browser.
For AI answers
Bing's Copilot integration, Perplexity and Brave's AI summaries all write answers with links to sources. They're useful for research, but always check the cited pages before relying on a claim. Our guide to free AI search engines compares these tools in more depth, and our overview of Bing AI and Copilot covers Microsoft's approach.
For ad-free, customizable results
Kagi charges a subscription and in return shows no ads and lets you boost, lower or block specific sites. It suits heavy researchers and developers who are tired of low-quality pages.
For a cause
Ecosia directs its profits to tree planting and climate projects and publishes financial reports. Results quality is comparable to the engines it partners with.
For specific countries
If you research or market in Russia, China or South Korea, use the local leader (Yandex, Baidu, Naver) to see what local users actually see.
How to switch your default search engine
- Chrome: Settings, then Search engine, then choose from the list or manage search engines to add another.
- Safari (Mac and iPhone): Settings, then Search, then Search Engine. Options include Google, Yahoo, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Ecosia.
- Firefox: Settings, then Search, then Default Search Engine.
- Edge: Settings, then Privacy, search and services, then Address bar and search.
In the EU, browsers and phones may show a choice screen when you set them up, a result of the Digital Markets Act.
What alternative search engines mean for SEO
Most businesses optimize only for Google, and that's usually the right priority. But because Bing powers results for Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and several AI assistants, ignoring it means missing a meaningful slice of traffic, especially from desktop and business users.
- Set up Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit your sitemap and check for crawl issues. You can import settings from Google Search Console.
- Use IndexNow. Bing, Yandex and others support this protocol for notifying search engines about new or updated pages quickly.
- Don't block legitimate crawlers. Check your robots.txt and firewall so Bingbot, Applebot, DuckDuckBot and Brave's crawler can reach your site, unless you have a reason to block them.
- Write clear, well-sourced content. AI-driven engines cite pages that answer questions directly and back claims with evidence.
- Keep local listings consistent. Bing Places and Apple Business Connect matter for local search outside Google.
The fundamentals in our article on how search engines work apply to all of them. A broader search engine optimization service can make sure your site is visible across Google, Bing and AI answer engines at once.

DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Brave Search and Mojeek all say they don't build personal profiles from your searches. Read each privacy policy for the details.
Are AI tools like Perplexity search engines?
